Gibb wrote "Emotion", "Staying Alive" and "How Deep Is Your Love". The Bee Gees achieved worldwide success, but after the death of their father, the group became over-heated and broke up in 1977. Gibb moved to California; he co-wrote songs with his brothers for other artists, but also became a solo artist.
His first solo album was "Sailing" (1979). His second album, "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" (1980), contained the very successful hit single "Love So Right". After this successful start for Gibb, his career stalled somewhat and he found himself performing at clubs with less and less fanfare.
He has enjoyed a successful career since then, with several more solo albums and multi-platinum selling singles such as "We've Only Just Begun", which was number one for six weeks on the Billboard charts in 1981. His greatest success came with another number one hit single, albeit not on Billboard's Hot 100 chart: "The River of Dreams", which has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. He has also released albums together with his brothers Robin and Maurice.
